Layered

Layered Rugs – Scandinavian Design with a More Expressive Side

Layered approaches the rug as an important part of the architecture and atmosphere of a room rather than simply an accessory added at the end.

Across quiet wool rugs, natural jute designs, long-pile textures and highly graphic artist collaborations, the collection moves comfortably between understated Scandinavian interiors and rooms where colour or pattern is intended to take centre stage.

Founded in Stockholm in 2015

Layered was founded in Stockholm in 2015 by Malin Glemme after she struggled to find a designer rug that combined the quality, design character and production approach she wanted for her own home.

That search developed into a Swedish design brand where rugs are treated as an active part of the interior, with colour, material, pattern and scale considered just as carefully as the furniture placed around them.

Designed in Stockholm

Layered develops its collections from Stockholm, drawing inspiration from art, architecture, fashion and Scandinavian design history.

That breadth of influence helps explain why the collection can move from quiet tonal rugs to highly graphic designs without losing its recognisable emphasis on material and proportion.

Handcrafted Rugs

Handcraft sits at the centre of the Layered collection, with rugs produced using traditional techniques including weaving, tufting and knotting.

The handmade nature of the rugs introduces subtle variation in texture and finish, helping each design retain a more tactile character than a completely uniform machine-produced surface.

Layered Wool Rugs

Wool is one of the defining materials within the Layered collection, appearing across both understated designs and more expressive patterned rugs.

At RB12, the wool selection includes designs such as the
Layered Swedish Grace Rug,
Layered Gotland Rug
and
Layered Evelina Kroon Shaggy Rug.

The warmth and tactile quality of wool make these rugs particularly effective in living rooms and bedrooms, where the surface can soften harder materials such as timber, glass, stone and metal.

The Layered Chess Rug

The Layered Chess Rug is one of the easiest ways to introduce a stronger pattern into a room without allowing the rug to dominate the surrounding furniture.

Its classic checkerboard pattern is handwoven from 100% New Zealand wool using a flatweave construction, creating a relatively low-profile surface that works particularly well beneath dining tables and contemporary seating.

RB12 offers Chess in Sage, Black & White, Burgundy and Mustard Yellow, allowing the same graphic pattern to move from understated to considerably more expressive depending on the colour selected.

Natural Jute and Sisal Rugs

For rooms where natural texture is more important than deep pile, Layered also works with materials such as jute and sisal.

The Layered Barley Jute Rug
offers a relaxed natural-fibre surface, while the
Layered Strata Braided Jute Rug
introduces more visible structure through its braided construction.

For a firmer and more architectural texture, the
Layered Basket Weave Sisal Rug
provides another natural alternative to wool.

The Layered Röllakan Collection

The Röllakan collection draws on the Scandinavian tradition of flatwoven rugs, reinterpreting the technique through contemporary colour and simplified graphic pattern.

RB12 offers several designs from the collection, including the
Layered Röllakan Iris Rug,
Layered Röllakan Selma Rug,
Layered Röllakan Ruth Rug
and
Layered Röllakan Solid Rug.

The flatter construction makes Röllakan particularly useful where a rug needs to sit comfortably beneath furniture while still introducing colour and pattern.

Layered x Evelina Kroon

Layered's collaboration with Swedish artist Evelina Kroon explores the meeting point between art, graphic structure and interior textiles.

The Layered Evelina Kroon Rug
uses Kroon's distinctive approach to geometry and colour, while the
Layered Evelina Kroon Shaggy Rug
moves the collaboration into a deeper and more tactile long-pile format.

These rugs work particularly well where the floor is intended to become a visible part of the composition rather than simply a quiet background to the furniture.

Layered x Teklan

Swedish colourist and interior architect Tekla Evelina Severin brings a highly architectural approach to colour and geometry within the Layered collection.

The Layered Teklan Fregio Rug
uses framing and optical structure, while the
Layered Teklan Labyrinth Rug
and
Layered Teklan Diagonal Rug
develop the collaboration through bold directional pattern and geometric compositions.

The result is a collection particularly suited to rooms where the rug is expected to contribute strongly to the colour scheme and architectural character of the space.

The Gio Collection

The Gio collection explores geometry, rhythm and bold colour through a series of expressive wool rugs with a strong connection to Italian modernist design.

RB12 currently offers the
Layered Gio Mezza Confetto Rug,
Layered Gio Coppa Canella Rug
and
Layered Gio Doppio Rossa Rug.

These designs are particularly effective where a rug is intended to operate almost like artwork on the floor, bringing stronger colour and movement into otherwise restrained furniture schemes.

The Layered Swedish Grace Rug

The Layered Swedish Grace Rug
draws on the elegant geometry and decorative restraint associated with Swedish Grace and Art Deco influences.

Handwoven in 100% wool, the design uses subtle changes in texture and pattern to give the surface depth while remaining restrained enough for both contemporary and more classic interiors.

At RB12, Swedish Grace is available in Oatmeal and Bone White across several generous sizes, including formats suitable for large living rooms.

Layered x Collina Strada

Layered's collaboration with New York fashion label Collina Strada brings a more expressive, fashion-led visual language into the rug collection.

The Layered Collina Strada Garden Wool Rug
uses a hand-carved floral-inspired composition, while the
Layered Collina Strada Petal Wool Rug
and
Layered Collina Strada Plaid Wool Rug
translate further motifs from the collaboration into tactile wool surfaces.

The collection is particularly effective in interiors where the rug is intended to introduce personality and visible pattern rather than disappear quietly beneath the furniture.

Shaggy Rugs and Scandinavian Rya Influence

Layered's longer-pile rugs introduce greater softness and depth, making them particularly appealing in bedrooms and relaxed living areas.

The Layered Shaggy Rug
offers a simpler high-pile option, while the
Layered Evelina Kroon Shaggy Rug
combines the tactile long-pile format with a much more graphic artistic expression.

Layered Rugs for Living Rooms

In a living room, a larger rug can visually connect the sofa, armchairs and coffee table into one more coherent seating area.

A quieter wool or natural-fibre rug can provide a calm foundation for expressive furniture, while a stronger design such as the
Layered Gio Mezza Confetto Rug
or
Layered Teklan Fregio Rug
can become one of the defining visual elements in the room.

Layered Rugs for Dining Rooms

A rug beneath a dining table can define the dining area within an open-plan interior while softening the relationship between chairs, table and flooring.

The flatwoven Layered Chess Rug
is particularly relevant here because its lower-profile construction can sit more comfortably beneath dining chairs than a deeper shaggy rug.

Whichever design you choose, allow enough space beyond the tabletop for the chairs to remain on the rug as they are pulled away from the table.

Choosing the Right Layered Rug Size

Rug size can have as much impact on the finished room as colour or pattern. A rug that is too small can make individual pieces of furniture feel disconnected, while a more generous size can help the whole arrangement feel intentional.

Layered produces many of its designs across several standard dimensions, ranging from smaller formats through to substantial 300 x 400 cm rugs for large living spaces.

Natural and Recycled Materials

Materials vary considerably throughout the Layered collection, with wool, jute, sisal, cotton and recycled fibres all appearing across different rug families.

This allows the material to be selected around the way the room will actually be used — whether the priority is softness, flatwoven practicality, natural texture or a more expressive deep-pile surface.

Choosing a Layered Rug at RB12

Choosing between Layered rugs often comes down to more than colour alone. Material, pile height, construction, room size and the furniture surrounding the rug all affect how the design will feel once it is placed in the space.

The RB12 team can help compare sizes, colours and materials when selecting a Layered rug for a living room, dining room, bedroom or wider interior project.
