Kajo is a rug with a glow at its edge. Its warm, light yellow ground is woven in a twill familiar from denim, where a thin weft and a thick black warp yarn create a bold diagonal rhythm. One edge ends in a deliberate hand-stitched black finish that echoes raw-edged fabric. The opposite edge rises into a deep electric blue long-pile border.

It is hand-woven from 100% high-quality New Zealand wool, with hand-embroidered and hand-knotted details. Ervin Latimer designed it, and the name comes from his mother’s family roots in Siikajoki.

Kajo works as a floor rug or as a wall hanging. It comes in two sizes. The 60 x 90 cm size is particularly well suited to hanging, and the 170 x 240 cm size is made for the floor.

Description

A rug with a glow at its edge

The Kajo Wool Rug by Finarte starts quietly: a warm, light yellow ground with a fine diagonal structure. Then the edges change the picture. One side is finished with a deliberate hand-stitched black detail, and the opposite side rises into a lush, deep electric blue long-pile border.

It is a high-impact piece that works equally well in homes and in professional interiors.

A twill weave borrowed from denim

The yellow ground is woven in a twill weave, the same structure familiar from denim. A thin weft is combined with a thick black warp yarn, which creates an accentuated diagonal rhythm across the surface.

Two edges, two finishes

One edge carries a hand-stitched black detail that references the raw-edged finish found in fabric. The other edge is a deep electric blue long-pile border that stands up from the surface, in a gesture that recalls the Finnish ryijy tradition.

Named for the first light of dawn

Designer Ervin Latimer took the name Kajo from his mother’s family roots in 17th-century Siikajoki, using the middle syllables of a compound word. Kajo means a faint glow or the first light of dawn, and that is the quality of the blue edge: a detail that appears quietly at the periphery and is impossible to ignore.

Designed by Ervin Latimer

Ervin Latimer designed the Kajo for Finarte. He trained as a fashion designer, and the denim-like twill and the raw-edged detail reflect that background, where clothing and textile art overlap.

A floor rug or a wall hanging

Kajo is designed to work on the floor or on the wall. The smaller 60 x 90 cm size is particularly well suited to hanging and brings the full character of the piece to any wall.

Kajo sizes

Kajo is made in two sizes:

  • 60 x 90 cm: particularly well suited as a wall hanging
  • 170 x 240 cm: a full-size rug for a seating or dining area

Hand-woven New Zealand wool

Kajo is a hand-woven rug made from 100% high-quality New Zealand wool, with hand-embroidered and hand-knotted details. It is handmade in India by Finarte’s long-term weaving partners.
