The Domingo Ares Sofa Bed hides something far more useful than a conventional fold-out mattress. Lift the mechanism upwards and the sofa transforms into two separate bunk beds, creating sleeping space for two guests without needing the floor area of two permanent beds.

In everyday use, Ares remains a substantial, carefully upholstered sofa. When guests stay over, a smooth lifting mechanism reveals the two integrated sleeping levels, with protective rails around the upper bed and safety locking built into the structure.

At 225 cm wide and 95 cm deep, Ares is particularly clever for guest rooms, studies, holiday homes and multifunctional spaces where every square metre needs to work harder. Rather than choosing between a proper sofa and two guest beds, Ares allows the same piece of furniture to perform both roles.

Description

Ares is a sofa bed that extends upwards to turn into a bunk bed, thus making the most of the space available. Its smart, compact outline hosts an extremely user-friendly space-saving soul. A relaxing corner can turn into a sleeping area in just a few minutes, as the sofa reveals two comfortable beds enclosed between the backrest and armrests, and shows its versatile and welcoming nature.

A Sofa That Transforms into Two Bunk Beds

The Domingo Ares Sofa Bed takes a very different approach to guest accommodation. Instead of pulling a double mattress forwards into the room, Ares extends upwards to reveal two separate sleeping levels.

Part of the wider Domingo collection at RB12, Ares is designed for spaces where a comfortable sofa is required every day but two additional guest beds occasionally need to appear without permanently occupying the room.

This makes Ares particularly useful in multifunctional guest rooms, studies, holiday properties and hospitality spaces where floor area needs to perform more than one role.

Two Guest Beds Within One Sofa Footprint

The defining advantage of Ares is space efficiency. The two beds are contained within the backrest, seat and arm structure of the closed sofa and are revealed by lifting the internal mechanism upwards.

Rather than requiring the clear floor depth associated with a conventional forward-opening sofa bed, much of the transformation happens vertically.

For rooms that need to remain useful during the day but occasionally accommodate two people overnight, this vertical bunk arrangement can be considerably more practical than keeping two permanent single beds in the room.

Smooth Vertical Opening Mechanism

Domingo describes the Ares opening mechanism as smooth, light and easy to operate.

The front section is lifted before the internal bed structure rises into position, transforming the sofa from daytime seating into a two-level sleeping arrangement.

Because Ares contains a substantial mechanical bunk-bed system, always follow the manufacturer’s opening and closing sequence and ensure the safety locks are correctly engaged before either bed is used.

Integrated Safety System

Ares incorporates dedicated safety features within the bunk mechanism rather than relying solely on the weight of the structure to hold the beds in position.

Domingo’s technical specification identifies a double-block safety locking system located within the mechanism frame.

The upper bed is also enclosed by protective rails on both sides, an important feature when the sofa is being used in its raised bunk-bed configuration.

Ares Sofa Dimensions

In its normal sofa configuration, Ares measures:

  • Width: 225 cm
  • Depth: 95 cm
  • Height: 90 cm
  • Seat height: 49 cm

The sofa therefore has the proportions of a substantial everyday seating piece rather than looking like a compact temporary guest bed.

Before ordering, measure not only the available floor area but also access through doors, corridors and staircases, as well as the ceiling clearance required when the bunk mechanism is fully raised.

174 cm High When Open

When Ares is opened into its bunk-bed configuration, the structure reaches approximately 174 cm high.

This makes ceiling height an important part of specifying Ares. The sofa itself may fit comfortably into the room while closed, but sufficient clear space above it is also required for the upper sleeping platform and for comfortable access to that bed.

Two Different Single Mattresses

The Ares bunk system uses two individual polyurethane mattresses sized specifically for the mechanism.

  • Upper mattress: approximately 80.5 × 187 cm
  • Upper mattress depth: approximately 15 cm
  • Lower mattress: approximately 75 × 190 cm
  • Lower mattress depth: approximately 12 cm

The mattresses therefore differ slightly in both width and length rather than using two identical standard UK single-mattress dimensions.

This should be considered when buying fitted sheets or replacement bedding for the Ares sleeping system.

Mattresses Designed for the Ares Mechanism

Domingo specifies polyurethane mattresses for Ares, available in standard or fire-retardant versions depending on specification.

The technical specification also identifies stretch mattress covers designed with anti-dust and anti-mite properties.

Because mattress dimensions and thickness are directly related to how the bunk mechanism closes, replacement mattresses should always be checked against Domingo’s specification rather than substituting a deeper conventional mattress.

High-Resistance Steel Bed Support

Beneath the mattresses, Ares uses a high-resistance electro-welded steel mesh within the sleeping structure.

This forms part of the engineered bunk-bed mechanism rather than simply placing loose mattresses on top of the sofa cushions.

Steel feet provide support at floor level, while the main upholstered structure is built around a composite-wood frame.

Supportive Sofa Cushioning

Ares is designed to function as everyday seating rather than simply disguising a guest bed.

Domingo specifies high-resilience polyurethane foam in different densities, combined with a Dacron® fibre layer, within the upholstered structure.

Using different densities allows the upholstery to provide support where needed while retaining the softer surface expected from a living-room sofa.

Removable Back and Armrest Elements

Domingo’s technical specification identifies the backrest and armrests as removable through a bayonet fitting system.

This is particularly useful for a 225 cm sofa when access into the property is restricted, although doorway, staircase and lift dimensions should still be checked carefully before ordering.

A Guest Room That Still Works During the Day

Ares is particularly effective in a dedicated guest room that also needs to function as a study, snug or secondary living room.

Two permanent single beds can dominate that type of room even when nobody is staying. With Ares, the sleeping accommodation remains concealed until it is needed, leaving a proper sofa available for everyday use.

Ideal for Holiday Homes and Flexible Accommodation

The two-bed configuration also makes Ares useful where occasional sleeping capacity has commercial or practical value, including holiday homes and hospitality environments.

A room that normally operates as a lounge can become sleeping accommodation for two without bringing separate temporary beds into the space.

Domingo itself positions its sofa-bed range across both residential and hospitality applications where furniture needs to combine seating and sleeping functions.

Choose Your Ares Upholstery

Domingo produces Ares for upholstered specification in fabric and leather-based coverings, allowing the appearance of the sofa to be tailored to the surrounding interior.

Exact upholstery availability and pricing can vary by Domingo material category, so use the current product options above or contact RB12 for help choosing the most appropriate covering.

This is particularly useful for projects where Ares will be used frequently, as upholstery can be selected with the intended residential or hospitality environment in mind.

Ares or Domingo Ermes?

For another Domingo sofa that converts into two sleeping levels, compare Ares with the Domingo Ermes Sofa Bed.

Ermes has a lighter, more minimal profile and is available through RB12 as either a traditional sofa or chaise-longue configuration. Like Ares, its key purpose is combining everyday seating with two additional guest beds.

Choose Ares when you want the more substantial enclosed sofa form and dedicated bunk mechanism. Consider Ermes when a slimmer, more understated silhouette better suits the room.

Ares or Domingo Elektra?

If bunk beds are not essential, the Domingo Elektra Sofa Bed offers a more conventional sleeping arrangement.

Elektra is designed around a traditional sofa-bed mechanism with an 18 cm mattress on an electro-welded metal mesh base and is intended to provide substantial comfort as both sofa and bed.

Choose Ares when accommodating two people in separate beds within limited floor space is the main requirement. Choose Elektra when a more conventional bed layout and deeper mattress better suit the intended guests.

Ares or Domingo Eris?

For a sofa bed designed around lounging and a double sleeping surface, compare Ares with the Domingo Eris Sofa Bed.

Eris combines a wide sofa with a chaise longue and can transform into a double bed, while storage beneath the chaise provides space for bedding.

Ares is the more specialised space-saving solution when two separate beds are required; Eris is better suited to a living room where a chaise sofa and double guest bed are the preferred combination.
