Bolia Cord Sideboard

from £3,109.00

The Bolia Cord Sideboard balances the substance of solid oak with the unexpected lightness of woven Danish paper cord. Its finely braided doors introduce texture and depth across the front, softening the cabinet and giving everyday storage a distinctly Scandinavian character.

Designed by German studio Hertel & Klarhoefer, Cord is built around the contrast between strong cabinetmaking and an almost delicate woven surface. Behind the paper-cord front sits practical enclosed storage, while the broad upper surface provides space for lighting, artwork, ceramics and the objects you want to keep visible.

Available at RB12 in 120 cm and 168 cm widths, Cord can work as a compact dining-room sideboard or a more substantial living-room storage piece. Choose between light and dark oak expressions, or explore the wider Cord collection when you need the same material language in a taller Highboard or specialist DJ Console.

Description

Solid Oak Storage with Woven Danish Paper Cord

The Bolia Cord Sideboard combines substantial solid-oak construction with a much lighter woven front. Fine strands of paper cord stretch across the doors, introducing texture and depth while preventing the cabinet from feeling like one uninterrupted block of timber.

Part of the wider Bolia collection at RB12, Cord reflects the Danish brand’s material-led approach to Scandinavian furniture, allowing natural timber, craftsmanship and tactile detailing to become central to the design.

The result is practical enclosed storage with enough visual character to become an important part of a dining room, living space or larger hallway.

Designed by Hertel & Klarhoefer

Cord was designed by German studio Hertel & Klarhoefer. The designers place particular emphasis on materiality, often working with materials and full-scale prototypes early in the design process rather than treating surface finishes as a final decorative decision.

That thinking is easy to see in Cord. The underlying form is intentionally restrained, leaving the contrast between solid oak and woven paper cord to create much of the furniture’s identity.

The Signature Danish Paper-Cord Front

The defining detail of the Cord collection is its Danish paper-cord front. The fine braided surface introduces a softer and more intricate material expression than a conventional solid-oak cabinet door.

Bolia states that the Danish Cord used within the collection is developed and produced in the small Danish town of Randers, connecting the design with a longstanding Scandinavian tradition of paper-cord craftsmanship.

The weave also creates subtle changes in shadow across the front throughout the day, allowing an otherwise simple cabinet to remain visually interesting without additional handles or decorative ornament.

Crafted from Solid Oak

Bolia specifies the Cord Sideboard in solid oak. The substantial timber construction gives the cabinet its grounded quality, while the woven fronts and elevated base prevent that solidity from becoming visually heavy.

Natural variations in timber grain and tone are part of the character of solid oak, allowing individual cabinets to retain some visible variation rather than presenting a completely uniform artificial surface.

120 cm or 168 cm Cord Sideboard?

RB12 offers the Cord Sideboard in two widths. Both versions are approximately 80 cm high and 45 cm deep, allowing you to choose the storage capacity and visual scale that works best with the room.

  • Cord Sideboard 120: W120 × D45 × H80 cm
  • Cord Sideboard 168: W168 × D45 × H80 cm

The 120 cm version is the more compact option, making it easier to place within smaller dining rooms, living spaces and hallways.

At 168 cm wide, the larger Cord creates a stronger horizontal presence and provides more generous storage and display space without moving into the scale of an oversized 200 cm-plus sideboard.

Storage Capacity & Weight

The two Cord sizes differ slightly in overall capacity as well as width.

  • 120 cm Sideboard: approximately 36 kg net weight; maximum overall load approximately 40 kg
  • 168 cm Sideboard: approximately 46 kg net weight; maximum overall load approximately 30 kg
  • Maximum load per shelf: approximately 20 kg

Because the manufacturer’s overall load rating differs between the two models, these specifications should be tied to the selected size rather than shown as one universal figure for the entire product page.

Light or Dark Oak

RB12 currently offers Cord in two different oak expressions:

  • White-Pigmented Oiled Oak
  • Dark Oiled Oak

White-pigmented oak creates the lightest and most recognisably Scandinavian expression, particularly when combined with natural paper cord.

Dark-oiled oak creates a deeper and more architectural appearance, with the darker timber and cord allowing the cabinet to provide stronger contrast against pale walls, stone and lighter upholstery.

A Sideboard for the Dining Room

Cord is particularly well suited to the dining room, where the enclosed cabinet can store tableware, glassware, serving pieces and other items that are useful to keep close to the table.

At 80 cm high, the top also provides a useful display surface for a table lamp, ceramics, artwork or decorative objects without becoming excessively tall against the wall.

Natural Texture for the Living Room

Within a living room, the paper-cord doors introduce texture beside softer materials such as wool, linen and upholstery, while the solid-oak construction provides enough visual substance to ground the surrounding furniture.

Books, games, documents and everyday household objects can remain concealed inside, leaving the broad upper surface free for the pieces you actually want to form part of the room.

A Scandinavian Sideboard Without a Solid Front

One of Cord’s strongest advantages is that it provides the warmth and longevity associated with substantial timber furniture without presenting the room with a completely solid wooden facade.

The paper-cord sections visually break up the cabinet front, making Cord particularly relevant when you want a natural-material sideboard but prefer something lighter and more tactile than conventional panelled storage.

Made in Europe

Bolia lists the Cord Sideboard as handmade in Europe. Current manufacturer specifications identify the cabinet as produced in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with solid European oak forming the principal construction.

The Danish paper cord associated with the Cord collection is developed and produced separately in Randers, Denmark.

The legs require mounting after delivery, so access through doors, staircases and lifts should be checked against the selected 120 cm or 168 cm cabinet before ordering.

Complete the Bolia Cord Collection

Cord is a wider family of storage furniture built around the same combination of solid oak and braided Danish paper cord.

When you need greater storage capacity but have less horizontal wall space, the Bolia Cord Highboard takes the same material language upwards in a 90 cm-wide, 160 cm-high format.

Using the Sideboard and Highboard together allows the same solid-oak and paper-cord detailing to repeat across different storage functions without simply duplicating the same cabinet proportions.

Cord Sideboard or Cord Highboard?

Choose the Cord Sideboard when you want a strong horizontal element within the room and value the broad upper surface for lighting, artwork or decorative objects.

Choose the Cord Highboard when wall width is more limited and the priority is to maximise enclosed storage vertically.

Both designs retain the same core combination of solid oak and woven Danish paper cord, so the choice comes down primarily to room proportions and how you intend to use the storage.

Cord for Music & DJ Equipment

Bolia has also developed a specialist extension of Cord specifically for music and professional DJ equipment.

The Bolia Cord DJ Console retains the solid-oak and paper-cord aesthetic but is configured around Pioneer DJ equipment and associated audio hardware.

It should therefore be treated as a specialist member of the wider Cord family rather than as the description or intended use of the standard Cord Sideboard shown on this page.

Similar Bolia Sideboards at RB12

If you like Cord’s Scandinavian storage approach but want a different material or proportion, RB12 also offers several related Bolia collections.

The Bolia Cana Sideboard replaces Cord’s dense paper-cord weave with an airier woven front and a calmer seaside-inspired expression.

For a more architectural timber design, the Bolia Daia Sideboard uses long horizontal proportions, open geometry and optional drawers in 180 cm and 240 cm widths.

Cord is the stronger choice when solid oak and woven paper cord are the priority; Cana feels lighter and more transparent, while Daia places greater emphasis on architectural geometry and scale.
