Description
Solid Oak Storage with a Woven Paper-Cord Front
The Bolia Cord Highboard combines substantial solid-oak cabinetmaking with the visual lightness of a finely woven front. At 160 cm high, it provides significant vertical storage, while the braided paper cord prevents the cabinet from presenting the room with one uninterrupted block of timber.
Part of the wider Bolia collection at RB12, Cord reflects the Danish brand’s material-led approach to Scandinavian furniture, allowing natural timber, texture and craftsmanship to become central to the design.
The contrast between substantial oak and delicate woven cord is what gives the Highboard its character: practical storage with enough texture and detail to remain visually interesting even in a relatively restrained interior.
Designed by Hertel & Klarhoefer
Cord was designed by German studio Hertel & Klarhoefer. Their design process places particular emphasis on materiality, with ideas frequently explored through physical models and full-scale prototypes rather than treating materials as decoration applied at the end of the process.
That thinking is especially clear in Cord. The underlying geometry is intentionally restrained, giving the solid oak and braided paper cord enough space to provide the furniture’s visual identity.
Danish Paper Cord in a Woven Design
The Cord collection is distinguished by its Danish paper-cord front. Fine strands are woven across the cabinet doors to create a textured surface that feels considerably lighter than conventional solid timber storage.
Bolia states that the Danish Cord used within the collection is developed and produced in the Danish town of Randers, connecting the design with a Scandinavian tradition of paper-cord craftsmanship.
The fine braiding introduces depth and subtle shadow to the front of the cabinet, allowing Cord to remain visually calm while still rewarding closer inspection.
Made from Solid Oak
Bolia specifies the Cord Highboard in solid oak, giving the cabinet a substantial material quality that contrasts directly with the lighter woven doors.
The raised base leaves visible space beneath the main cabinet body, helping to reduce the visual weight of a piece that stands 160 cm high.
As with natural timber generally, individual pieces of oak can show variations in grain and tone, allowing the material itself to remain visible rather than creating a completely uniform surface.
Cord Highboard Dimensions
The Cord Highboard measures 90 cm wide × 45 cm deep × 160 cm high. Its proportions make much greater use of height than a conventional sideboard while retaining a relatively compact footprint.
- Width: 90 cm
- Depth: 45 cm
- Height: 160 cm
- Net product weight: approximately 53 kg
- Maximum weight capacity per shelf: approximately 20 kg
At only 90 cm wide, Cord is particularly useful where significant enclosed storage is required but there is not enough uninterrupted wall space for a conventional 160–240 cm sideboard.
More Storage Without Using More Wall Width
The main functional advantage of a highboard is its ability to move storage upwards rather than continuously outwards.
That can be particularly valuable in more compact dining and living rooms, where using a 90 cm-wide cabinet leaves additional wall space available for seating, artwork, lighting or circulation.
The 45 cm depth also provides useful internal storage without projecting excessively into the room.
Storage for Dining Rooms
In a dining room, the Cord Highboard provides a natural home for tableware, serving pieces, glassware and other items that are useful to keep close to the dining table but do not need to remain permanently on display.
Its vertical format is particularly useful where a longer sideboard would take valuable wall space away from the dining area, while the natural combination of oak and paper cord works easily alongside timber, stone and upholstered dining furniture.
A Tall Storage Cabinet for Living Spaces
Cord works equally well within a living room, where the enclosed cabinet can help organise books, games, documents and everyday objects without requiring everything to remain visible.
The woven paper-cord doors provide a softer textural counterpoint to sofas, rugs and other upholstered furniture, while the solid-oak structure gives the cabinet enough visual presence to stand independently on a larger wall.
A Natural Material Palette for Scandinavian Interiors
Cord works particularly naturally in interiors built around tactile materials rather than highly decorative detailing. Oak, paper cord, wool, linen, stone and ceramics can all sit comfortably together without competing for attention.
The woven front also prevents a taller cabinet from feeling overly formal, helping Cord work in more relaxed contemporary and Scandinavian schemes as well as cleaner architectural interiors.
Cord Finish Options
Bolia produces the Cord collection in different oak and paper-cord combinations, allowing the same furniture design to move between lighter Scandinavian schemes and deeper, more architectural interiors.
Current manufacturer specifications include dark-oiled solid oak paired with dark-brown cord, while other Cord configurations have also been produced with lighter oak and natural paper-cord combinations.
Use the finish options shown above to confirm the exact Cord Highboard combinations currently available from RB12 before ordering.
Crafted in Europe
Bolia lists the current Cord Highboard as handmade in Europe. The cabinet is produced in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the Danish paper cord associated with the collection is developed and produced in Randers, Denmark.
This distinction is useful because Cord combines an international furniture-production process with a woven material that has a specifically Danish manufacturing and craft story.
Complete the Bolia Cord Collection
The Cord Highboard belongs to a wider family of storage furniture built around the same combination of solid oak and woven paper cord.
For lower and wider storage, the Bolia Cord Sideboard brings the same material language into 120 cm and 168 cm formats. It is the more natural choice when you have greater horizontal wall space and want a broad surface for lighting, artwork or decorative objects.
Using a Cord Sideboard and Highboard within the same interior allows the oak and paper-cord detailing to repeat across different storage functions without simply duplicating the same cabinet.
Cord Highboard or Cord Sideboard?
Choose the Cord Highboard when storage capacity needs to be concentrated within a narrower section of wall. Its 160 cm height and 90 cm width allow it to make much greater use of vertical space.
Choose the Cord Sideboard when you have more horizontal wall space and want a lower cabinet with a larger display surface.
Both retain the defining combination of solid oak and woven Danish paper cord, so the choice is primarily about proportions, storage requirements and the relationship between the furniture and the room.
Cord for Music & DJ Equipment
Bolia has also developed a specialist branch of the Cord collection around music and professional DJ equipment.
The Bolia Cord DJ Console uses the same oak and paper-cord language but is specifically configured around audio and DJ equipment. It should therefore be considered a specialist companion to the Cord storage collection rather than an alternative version of the standard Highboard.
Similar Bolia Storage at RB12
If you like the material-led character of Cord but need different proportions or a different type of woven front, RB12 also carries other Bolia storage collections including Cana, Daia and Yacht.
Cana offers a lighter woven expression, Daia focuses more strongly on architectural oak proportions, while Yacht places greater emphasis on traditional timber craftsmanship. Exploring these collections alongside Cord can help determine whether height, width, material texture or enclosed storage is the strongest priority for your room.
