The Bolia Balloon Pendant combines an airy fabric shade with a soft, rounded silhouette, creating a light that feels decorative even before it is switched on.
Once illuminated, the semi-transparent material gently filters the light rather than containing it behind a solid shade, helping create a calmer and more atmospheric quality throughout the room.
Designed by Meike Harde
Balloon was designed by German designer Meike Harde, whose work often explores fine structures, transparency and subtle details within simple forms.
That approach is especially clear in Balloon, where a visually lightweight shade is balanced by carefully considered proportions and handcrafted detailing.
Sheer Fabric That Softens the Light
The Balloon shade is made from a fine, semi-transparent fabric designed to diffuse the light softly through its surface.
Rather than producing a hard pool of illumination, the fabric creates a more gentle glow that works particularly well in dining rooms, living spaces and areas where atmosphere matters as much as brightness.
Hand-Sewn Detailing
A series of precise hand-sewn details runs along the shade, introducing a subtle crafted element into Balloon’s otherwise clean and restrained form.
The stitching requires a specialised technique and careful workmanship, giving the pendant additional character when viewed both up close and from across the room.
Cloud – A Soft Horizontal Shape
The Cloud version has a broader, shallower silhouette that creates a soft floating presence overhead.
RB12 offers Cloud in approximately 49.5 x 30 cm and 57 x 35.5 cm formats, making it particularly effective above dining tables, coffee tables or within larger open-plan spaces.
Bell – Balanced and Familiar
The Bell version measures approximately Ø47 x H40 cm and offers a more traditional pendant proportion while retaining Balloon’s light, translucent expression.
Its balanced scale makes it easy to position over smaller dining tables, occasional tables or as a single decorative pendant within a bedroom or living area.
Drop – Taller and More Dramatic
The Drop version stretches Balloon into a taller vertical silhouette, measuring approximately Ø53.5 x H60 cm.
Its additional height gives it more presence in rooms with generous ceiling space and makes it especially effective when used as a standalone statement pendant.
Ecru Fabric and Coordinating Textile Cord
The current Balloon collection uses an Ecru fabric shade with a coordinating Ecru textile cable and ceiling rose, keeping the entire pendant visually consistent from shade to ceiling.
The warm neutral tone works particularly well with timber, stone, soft upholstery and other natural materials, while the translucent construction prevents the pendant from feeling visually heavy.
Beautiful Above a Dining Table
Balloon is particularly well suited to dining spaces because the soft fabric shade helps create a calmer, more intimate atmosphere around the table.
Choose a single larger pendant for a centred composition or use multiple Balloons to create a more expressive installation across a longer table or open-plan dining area.
Create a Cluster of Different Shapes
The Cloud, Bell and Drop forms can also be combined at different heights, allowing the related silhouettes to overlap without feeling repetitive.
The semi-transparent shades make this particularly effective, creating layers of soft fabric, light and shadow rather than a dense cluster of solid forms.
E27 Replaceable Light Source
Balloon uses a replaceable E27 light source rather than an integrated LED, allowing the bulb to be selected around the desired brightness and colour temperature.
The light source is not included. Balloon can also be dimmed when used with a compatible dimmable bulb and suitable electrical system.
Adjustable Suspension
The current Balloon pendants are supplied with a 3 metre textile cable that can be shortened during installation.
This gives greater flexibility when positioning the pendant above furniture or adjusting the suspension height around different ceiling proportions.
