Description
A Sculptural Dining Chair Shaped by Architecture
The 101 Copenhagen Daiku Dining Chair translates the rhythm of modular architecture into an upholstered chair designed around proportion, volume and restraint. Its bold silhouette feels almost monolithic at first glance, yet carefully separated forms and softened edges prevent the chair from appearing heavy.
Rather than relying on decorative detailing, Daiku allows its structure to provide the character. This makes it particularly effective in contemporary dining rooms where furniture is chosen as much for its shape and presence as for its everyday function.
Two Interlocking Volumes
At the centre of the Daiku design are two principal volumes: the seat and the backrest. They appear visually distinct but remain connected as one resolved piece of furniture.
The subtle division between the two creates an almost floating effect. It introduces negative space into an otherwise substantial form, giving the chair greater visual lightness when viewed around a dining table.
Minimal visible stitching reinforces this idea. Nothing unnecessary competes with the geometry, allowing the silhouette itself to remain the focus.
Designed by Kristian Sofus Hansen & Tommy Hyldahl
Daiku was designed by Kristian Sofus Hansen and Tommy Hyldahl for 101 Copenhagen. Their work brings together different creative influences: Hyldahl’s background in fashion contributes an interest in material, texture and historical references, while Hansen’s experience studying and living in Japan informs his approach to combining Japanese aesthetics with Danish design.
The Daiku Dining Chair demonstrates that combination particularly clearly. Its form is architectural and highly controlled, yet rounded transitions and upholstery introduce enough softness to make the design feel appropriate for the more social setting of a dining room.
Architectural Form, Softened for Comfort
Although Daiku has a strong geometric expression, 101 Copenhagen has deliberately softened the chair through its construction. Carefully layered foam gives shape to the seat and backrest, while gently rounded edges temper the otherwise cube-like form.
That balance matters around the dining table. The chair retains enough structure to make a visual statement while providing the upholstered character expected from seating intended for meals, entertaining and longer periods spent around the table.
Daiku Dining Chair Dimensions
The Daiku Dining Chair measures 82 cm high × 53 cm wide × 46 cm deep, with a net weight of approximately 14 kg.
- Height: 82 cm
- Width: 53 cm
- Depth: 46 cm
- Net weight: 14 kg
At 53 cm wide, Daiku has enough visual substance to hold its own around a larger dining table without moving into the proportions of a conventional dining armchair. When planning a full set, compare the chair width with the usable length of your table and leave enough space between seats for comfortable movement.
Designed for Indoor Dining
101 Copenhagen specifies the Daiku Dining Chair for indoor use. Its upholstered construction makes it particularly suited to dining rooms, open-plan kitchen and dining areas, and interior spaces where seating remains visible from several directions.
The sculptural back is especially important in an open-plan interior. Rather than presenting a purely functional rear view, Daiku maintains the same controlled geometry from different angles, allowing a row of chairs to contribute to the wider room even when seen from the living or kitchen area.
How to Style the Daiku Dining Chair
Daiku’s upholstered volume creates a useful contrast with harder dining-table materials. Pairing it with timber can introduce warmth and a more relaxed Scandinavian character, while stone, marble, glass or more architectural table designs can emphasise the chair’s sculptural quality.
Because the chair already has considerable presence, the surrounding scheme can remain restrained. A simple dining table, considered pendant lighting and a textured rug are enough to create a complete setting without competing with the seating.
Using a complete set creates a strong architectural rhythm around the table, while the relatively simple surface treatment keeps the composition from becoming visually busy.
The Daiku Collection
Daiku is conceived as a wider seating family rather than an isolated dining chair. The same architectural idea continues into the Daiku Lounge Chair, using interlocking upholstered volumes and softened geometry at a more relaxed scale.
This gives the collection particular relevance in open-plan interiors, where related dining and lounge seating can create continuity between different areas without requiring every piece of furniture to match exactly.
