The Bolia Zen Rug is designed around the idea of creating a calmer and more grounded foundation within the home.
Inspired by Japanese Zen gardens, its softened shapes and understated natural tones help define a space without the harder visual boundaries of a conventional rectangular rug.
Designed by Studio Emily Broom
Zen was designed by Australian Studio Emily Broom, whose multidisciplinary approach draws on architecture, interior design and visual communication.
The design explores simple geometry, tactile materials and the relationship between people and the spaces around them, giving Zen a sculptural quality without compromising its everyday function.
Winner of the Bolia Design Awards 2020
Studio Emily Broom won the Bolia Design Awards in 2020 with the Zen rug series.
The collection was conceived around everyday life and the desire to make the home feel like a small sanctuary, translating the contemplative quality of a Zen garden into a series of rugs with calm shapes and natural material expression.
100% Undyed Wool
Zen is made from 100% undyed wool, allowing the natural character of the fibre to provide the colour and texture rather than relying on heavily processed decorative finishes.
The wool gives the rug a warm, tactile surface while the restrained neutral palette makes it easy to introduce alongside timber, stone, upholstery and other natural materials.
Hand-Tufted in India
Each Zen Rug is hand-tufted in India, giving the finished piece the subtle variation associated with handmade textile production.
Bolia notes that handmade rugs can vary slightly in final size, so small differences in dimensions should be considered part of the character of the product rather than a manufacturing fault.
Four Shape Families at RB12
RB12 offers the Zen collection across Split, Shaped, Rounded and Doormat configurations, giving the range much more flexibility than a conventional rectangular rug collection.
The irregular and softened outlines allow the rug to respond to the furniture around it rather than simply creating a rigid frame beneath the room.
Zen Split
The Split versions use asymmetry to create a more sculptural floor composition, making them particularly effective beneath relaxed sofa arrangements and open-plan seating areas.
Rather than following the furniture with a simple rectangle, the outline creates movement around the edges of the seating arrangement and gives the rug a stronger decorative presence.
Zen Shaped
The Shaped versions continue the collection’s softened geometry across several different proportions, ranging from more compact formats to generous rugs for larger living spaces.
Their less conventional outlines can help create a more relaxed relationship between sofas, armchairs and occasional tables, particularly where the room itself does not follow a perfectly symmetrical layout.
Rounded Zen Rugs
Rounded Zen rugs soften a room even further, replacing sharp corners with a flowing outline that works especially well with curved sofas, round dining tables and more organic furniture arrangements.
Bolia also produces fully round Zen formats, giving the collection additional flexibility where a circular rug better suits the architecture or furniture above it.

Caring for the Bolia Zen Rug
Bolia recommends vacuuming the Zen Rug without using a brush attachment.
For deeper cleaning, Zen should be washed flat by a professional. Because each rug is handmade, slight variations in the final dimensions can occur.
